Nicodemus’ story

01/03/2026 by Rev Janet Spence

Dawn was breaking over the distant hills as I walked away. I looked up, and felt sure that something extraordinary was happening through the life of this man Jesus. Yes, I was confused, but at the same time I found myself walking away with hope and joy in my heart, and singing a favourite Psalm loud and clear into that new day…

I lift up my eyes to the hills—
from where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

A Sermon for Lent 1

22/02/2026 by Rev Janet Spence

This season of Lent is a gift, a gift to be celebrated, a gift of a time set apart from ordinary time. May we live it fully, and honestly, and by walking through Lent in prayer with God, may we begin to discover the reality of life lived in the freedom, truthfulness, and generosity of God’s love.

A sermon for the Transfiguration, 15 Feb 2026

15/02/2026 by Rev Janet Spence

Clouds are ever changing; fast moving or gently drifting. They are predictors of weather, things of beauty, at times ominous and threatening, at others creating a depth and complexity to sunlight. And try as we might, we cannot cling to clouds. In all this variety of ways, clouds are perhaps a wonderful metaphor for the revelation of God.

A sermon for Epiphany 5 2026

10/02/2026 by Rev Janet Spence

It is part of our being the light of the world, that we are called to hold the light, to hold onto hope when someone else, or somewhere else, is overwhelmed.
In being this, the world is never overcome by darkness.
In being this, the light of Christ can shine.
In being this, we too become the light of the world.

Sermon for The Presentation of the Lord 2026

04/02/2026 by Rev Janet Spence

I offer you this question, a question to ponder, and pray with; what is it that I need to do in my life to be able to wholeheartedly pray the Song of Simeon – Now O Lord, I can depart in peace?

Perhaps there’s a relationship or a hurt that needs some action from you in order for healing to happen, or an issue that you feel burdened by.

Please, take that question home with you for reflection, and prayer. And as you pray with your candle, listen for the Holy Spirit speaking to your heart and your mind, in the blessed light from your Candlemas candle.

A Sermon for the Baptism of the Lord 2026

15/01/2026 by Rev Janet Spence

Sin is our inability to truly believe ‘I am a precious child of God, and God delights in me’. So, just sit for a moment, open your ears, and your heart, and hear God’s words spoken to you; ‘You are my child, chosen and marked by my love, and I delight in you.’
